Thanks for support in school's sad loss

IT is a month since the tragic bus accident on Saturday July 21 ("Cradock crash horror", July 23). For Cradock Primary School this accident had far reaching results: our principal WJ (Wimpie) van der Merwe and SC Ferreira, a Grade 3 pupil from Cradock Preparatory School, were fatally injured.

Four staff members were seriously injured, many pupils also sustained injuries and our school bus was damaged beyond repair.

Cradock Primary School is coping well – the staff, substitute teachers as well as the pupils. All parties involved are living out the school's motto by aiming to do their best at all times.

The reaction from the people of South Africa was overwhelming and it is impossible to thank each person personally. Cards, phone calls, faxes, e-mails, SMSes and flowers were received from all over the country, and help was offered by many folk.

Notes and cards which were received from pupils of other schools right across the country really moved us all. The comforting hugs, inspiring words and prayers have carried us through this difficult time.

Thank you very much to each person who attended the memorial services.

In this period of 3½ years' service, Van der Merwe left a lasting impression in our school and community. We shall surely miss him, but will continue to build on the foundation he left us.

Thank you expresses how we sincerely feel.

Staff, pupils and governing body, Cradock Primary School
