A SCIENTIST conducting ground- breaking cancer research and a teacher who is happy to two- step if it means connecting with his students, are among two of the 28 men and women who were recognised at this year's Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Research, Teaching and Engagement Awards.
Prof Tommy Gerber, whose cancer research could ultimately minimise the harmful side-effects of existing treatment, was named as NMMU's 2012 Researcher of the Year, while Dr Logan Athiemoolam, of the Education Faculty, was honoured as the 2012 Teacher of the Year for his creative lecturing techniques.
"The awards promote and encourage cutting-edge research, innovation, creativity and best practice in teaching and learning, research and engagement," NMMU's deputy vice-chancellor: research and engagement Prof Thoko Mayeki said.
A professor of inorganic chemistry (chemistry involving metals), Gerber is one of a handful of scientists worldwide working towards the revolutionary treatment of cancer and other diseases by means of special metal compounds which target the diseased cells and destroy them internally, potentially with far fewer side effects.
But, in addition to his research breakthroughs, Gerber's research has improved thanks to new state-of-the-art equipment worth R15-million.
"This is really a prize for the last 10 to 15 years of work."
Athiemoolam's two main passions – using drama in the classroom and multicultural education – have helped him bring out the greatest potential in the students he has taught over the past 27 years.
"I don't like the lecture method. I prefer to focus on the different talents of learners, tapping into their creativity ..."
For the first time, NMMU recognised the contribution made by those who actively engage with various groups beyond the university.
The recipient of the Engagement Excellence Award went to Karl du Preez, of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology.
