Wake-up call for EP golfers despite defeat of mid-amateurs and u-19s

EASTERN Province wrap up their match preparations for next month's interprovincial at PE Golf Club with a fixture against the EP mid-amateur side at The Hill on Sunday.

Naldo Claassen's eight-man team were given a wake-up call in their matches against the mid-amateur and under-19 sides and will be looking for a turnaround this weekend.

Mzuyanda Zingela and Ryno Ferreira, who are regular and experienced mid-amateur players, played for the EP side in the practice match at St Francis Links.

But even though the mid-amateur team was weakened, they still managed to give the more fancied EP side a good run for their money with replacements Greg and Rhalf Manuel doing well.

EP beat the mid-ams 4-0 in the morning foursomes and the under-19s 3-1.

But it was in the singles that EP stuttered and stumbled.

Andile Adam at No8 halved with Greg Manuel and beat Granwell Gelderbloem 5/4, while Zingela at No7 halved Rhalf Manuel and beat Brian Wessels 4/2.

No6 Ferreira lost one down to Karl du Preez but beat Wijan Klein 1up. No5 Fezekile Kana lost one down to Gareth Calder and beat Francois Smith 6/5. Claassen at No4 lost 2/1 to Morris Olivier and by the same margin to Ronald Baxter.

Sieg Human (3) beat David Konzani 4/3 and beat Alwyn Griebenow 6/5 while Andre van Staden (2) lost 5/4 to Attie Burger but beat Michael Mayberry 1 up.

No1 Ray Taverner was whipped in both his matches, losing 7/5 to Anton Prinsloo and 6/5 to Hando Brophy.

The upshot was that EP hung on to a 6-6 draw with the mid-ams while beating the under-19s 9-3.

Manager Richard Hargreaves was concerned by the cavalier attitude of some of the EP players, who needed to practise.

Humewood's Claassen had rounds of 73 and 69 for a tournament total of two-under 142. That was good enough to beat Mark Lloyd (PEGC, 73 70), Attie Burger (U'hage, 72 71) and Sieg Human (U'hage, 68 75).
