THE NMMU Madibaz men's and women's hockey teams stood firm when it counted to clinch the EP premier league titles at the weekend with one round remaining.
The women's team extended their unbeaten run to 13 matches with a 9-0 thumping of St Peters and that means that closest rivals Gelvan Tornados, whom they play in their final fixture, cannot overtake them.
The Madibaz have moved to 39 points, while the Tornados' decisive 6-0 win over NMMU B saw them advance to 33 points with just one match left.
It has been an excellent effort by the varsity side and they will be looking for a clean sheet for the season when they face Gelvan on Thursday.
The men's premier league has been tightly contested by NMMU and Gelvan Hurricanes, and the Madibaz overcame their final hurdle with a 2-1 win against Gelvan on Saturday.
On Friday, the Madibaz had overhauled the Hurricanes on the log when they defeated Gelvan Units 5-0 and the Saturday result means they have a five-point cushion with the final round remaining.
NMMU set up their victory with two goals in the first half against the Hurricanes and although the Gelvan side pushed hard in the second half, getting one goal back, the Madibaz had sufficient control to hold on for the win.
