Cape Town schools to get own police

SIX schools in Cape Town are to receive the first specially trained "in-house" metro police officers to keep pupils and staff safe, according to a report today (September 13).

The Cape Argus reported that the pilot project would kick off at Oscar Mpheta High, Phoenix High, Crystal High, Lotus High, Bishop Lavis High and Sizimisele Kuyasa High at the start of next year.

The officers would be posted at the schools on a long-term basis to identify and address underlying problems which could lead to disorder, ill-discipline and crime.

Their training would equip them with skills to and strategies to overcome such problems.

According to the report, the project was a combined effort by the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape departments of education and community safety.
