A feast of treats for food lovers on Heritage Day

17 September 2012
THE Port Elizabeth suburbs of Kabega Park and Morningside are home to a vibrant Chinese community who will help stage a traditional food fair to celebrate Heritage Day on Monday September 24.

The fair will raise funds towards a building fund for the St Francis Xavier Anglican Church, which has congregation members from this community.

Judy Forlee (photographed above by Marc Sing Key) is a dab hand at cooking Chinese cuisine for crowds.

She will take charge of all the stir-fry, rice and noodle dishes, as well as the Shanghai steak, egg foo yung and sweet and sour chicken.

Other volunteers will make spring rolls, Hong Kong chicken, and wonton mein – a soup made with noodles and wonton pastry.

"There will also be Chinese snacks like pork buns, dim sum which we call sui mai, fried potato balls and ginger chicken or su kai," said Forlee. She is third-generation Chinese and her family originally came here from Meixian in southern China.

Besides Chinese cuisine there will be koeksisters, curry, boerewors rolls, pancakes and candy floss.

The fair will also have attractions such as stalls, Chinese dragon dance displays, Chinese writing and an informal dog show.

It will be held at Clever Kids (opposite Sacred Heart) in Cape Road, Kabega Park, from 10am to 4pm. – Louise Liebenberg
