THE University of Pretoria took the honours in the men's and women's events when the Mutual and Federal boat race was held in Port Alfred at the weekend.
The men's A final was a well-contested affair between Tukkies and UCT, taking place with wind speeds of between 38 and 41km/h.
With high tides and sharp corners, Tukkies gained a big lead early on and maintained the edge throughout.
Although UCT pushed hard to close the 5m gap, they were unable to overhaul the strong Pretoria team.
In the women's 4.2km race, Tukkies led from the outset and even though they struggled at the sharp banks in the Kowie River, they stayed ahead of Rhodes.
The Rhodians responded well to the strong winds, high tides and sharp corners by pushing hard to try to close the gap.
With their supporters cheering them on, the Rhodians put in a powerful finish but could not close the gap on Tukkies.
