ROGER Pheiffer (Walmer Cycling Club) came from behind to beat a strong field in the Greyvensteins Attorneys Gravel Road Race over 78km at the weekend.
The race started at a high pace with a small group entering the muddy single-track section at Norm-Hudlin some way in front of the rest of the field.
John-Lee Augustyn emerged from this section with a healthy lead over the two Pheiffers, Brent and Roger, with the rest of the field split.
The rest of the route was over gravel roads and the Pheiffers worked together to eventually pull back Augustyn on the return leg, which was against a strong easterly wind.
After three-quarters of the race, Roger Pheiffer broke away, Brent and Augustyn battling it out for second place in a sprint finish. Roger's winning time was two hours, 56 minutes, one second. Augustyn (Mecer-NMMU) was second and Brent Pheiffer (Walmer Cycling Club) came third, but they were given the same time of 2:59:09.
The women's section was won by Lindi Dorfling (Bizhub & Masters and Ladies) in 3:24:00, with Alea Brand (Mecer-NMMU) second and Lauren Colemen (Walmer Cycling Club) third.
