EASTERN Province athlete and SA crosscountry gold medallist Thamsanqa Jusayi is aiming to excel in his next challenge, the PetroSA marathon in Mossel Bay next week.
Jusayi, 70, from Motherwell, won the crosscountry grand masters 6km category in Durban and a half-marathon in Cape Town, showing he is still a fierce competitor despite starting with road running back in 1968. He became a professional runner in 2003. The highlights of that year included winning the SA Marathon Championship in Durban and coming first in the 60-year-old plus category in the Two Oceans Marathon.
"I can't imagine myself without jogging to keep myself in shape," Jusayi said.
"I might be old, but I'm still active in sport and I'm living a healthy life style."
He hopes to participate in the SA trials in Cape Town in February with the aim of making the team for the 2016 Brazil Olympic Games' grand masters category.
"Crosscountry is the best way to go if we want to do well in athletics," Jusayi, a member of the Nedbank Athletics Club, said.
