A PORT Elizabeth ANC councillor appeared in the Motherwell Magistrate's Court yesterday on charges of assault, after he allegedly beat a sickly woman during a service delivery protest.

Ward 54 councillor Aaron Nyikilana is the second councillor from the area to appear on criminal charges this week, after Ward 55 councillor Mthunzi Madolo appeared in court on Monday, charged with drunk driving.

Nyikilana is accused of punching Nombuyselo Bidaza, 52, in the face before shoving her to the ground during protests in July. Bidaza claimed she sustained bruising and swelling to the face and still battled to carry out day-to-day chores due to an injury to her back.

The trial has been set down for October 5. Nyikilana was unavailable for comment.

Meanwhile, Madolo is out on bail after he hit a pedestrian with his car while allegedly driving drunk last weekend. The victim, Ntsikelelo Mayiyane, 46, is recovering in hospital with two broken legs.

Also in court was Ward 57 councillor, Thembile Nkosiyapantsi, although as a complainant. On Tuesday he attended the court proceedings of several residents he has accused of intimidating him and colleagues.
