ON Monday September 17 The Herald featured councillor Nomakazi Cobo's letter which highlighted violence against women in Kwanobuhle (two murders and one incident of gender violence) ("Women not celebrated"), as well as an article describing the strangulation of a pregnant woman in Uitenhage. On Friday September 14 the first hearing in the trial for the attempted murder of Avril Gordon was held in Port Elizabeth.
These cruel attacks and murders suggest that women's lives are at risk throughout the metro, and that as the state becomes increasingly fractured and inward-looking women are its victims as excluded, vulnerable outsiders. The Dawn (DA Women's Network) urges all women to speak out about gender violence, and to stand together as one another's eyes and ears.
The Dawn continues to monitor Freddy Gordon's court appearances and will do the same for any other such cases because public pressure does influence outcomes. We will work tirelessly to protect marginalised, vulnerable women and invite any women interested in supporting our effort to contact the DA offices at (041) 582-1770.
