MUCH has been written about the incredible stupidity of some taxi drivers in Port Elizabeth and most drivers, myself included, will no doubt have witnessed this on numerous occasions.
However, after observing the following, potentially fatal, incident at the weekend, I feel compelled to comment on what I saw!
Picture it: two lanes of traffic waiting at the lights at the junction of Main Road and the Walmer Park access road (left). The lights change to green, the traffic sets off and a taxi (the registration number of which I have) appears in the "left turn only" lane, accelerates and cuts right across into the path of the now accelerating traffic in the two right-hand lanes!
There were no CCTV cameras or traffic officers to witness this blatant act of idiocy or apprehend the cretin driving this taxi. I still don't know what a Port Elizabeth traffic officer looks like, but then I've only lived in the city for seven years!
Regarding the dangerous, inconsiderate people who appear unable to drive without a cellphone attached to their ears, the proposal of a minimum fine of R1500 – as was suggested recently – sounds good, but who's going to enforce this penalty ?
