Flight of fancy can benefit charity

04 October 2012

AVIATION fans attending this year's The Master Power Technologies PE International Air Show on October 27 will have a chance to do their bit for charity as tickets for The Herald Christmas Cheer Fund will be on sale.

MTR Smit Children's Haven, one of 17 beneficiaries this year, will be selling raffle tickets for the car draw, sponsored by Volkswagen Group South Africa.

Some of the attractions include the Falcons, a Hawk – the steel bird, not the feathered kind – and skydiving. Celebrity daredevils Patrick Davidson and Stuart Smith will also take each other on in a quarter mile (800m) drag race – Davidson several metres above the ground in his Sukhoi 31 airplane and Smith on the ground on his Kawasaki ZX-14 motorbike.

Beggar-in-Chief Steven Lancaster encouraged residents to "make your contribution, big or unique". He said he would also be available to attend functions which Kingfisher FM would promote on the Christmas Cheer blog at www.christmascheer.co.za.

"We've celebrated Mandela Day and Heritage Day over these last few weeks, and of course coming up is Christmas, which is about family and friends. Everybody can do something. For corporations, a small or medium company, we will acknowledge your contribution," he said.

Those wanting to do something unique could, for example, organise a braai, tea or breakfast. Guests would then have to buy raffle tickets – the charities could provide the booklets – to gain entry.

Raffle tickets are available at various points or at one of the 17 charities in the city. Donations can also be made at Newspaper House, 19 Baakens Street, Central.
