EASTERN Province's Carli van Onselen reached two finals in the under-12 section of the Key Health South African junior tennis championships in Bloemfontein, but had to be content with the runner-up position on both occasions.
Up against Zoe Kruger, of Pretoria, in the u-12 girls' singles final, Van Onselen fought hard to take a 3-1 lead in the second set but ended up losing 6-1 6-3.
Van Onselen was again up against Kruger in the girls' doubles final where the honours again went to her Pretoria rival as Kruger and Lara van der Merwe defeated Van Onselen and Western Province partner Bianca Wolmarans 7-5 6-4.
There was some success, however, for EP players, with sixth-seeded Dylan Puchert and Heinrich Willemse winning the u-14 doubles title with a 4-6 6-0 10-7 win over Gauteng North's Jordan Sauer and Christiaan Worst, the third seeds.
EP u-14 player Kaylin Bouwer also reached the girls' doubles final, partnering WP's Corin de Waal, but they ended up losing to sisters Lee and Zani Barnard, of North West, 6-1 6-2.
Unseeded Aidan Karrazedo, of Gauteng Central, took the boys' u-18 singles honours after beating seventh seed Joshua Luck, of Western Province, 3-6 7-5 6-2 in the final.
In Sunday's semifinal, Karrazedo upset top seed Christiaan van der Bergh, of Boland.
Jessica Simpson, of Cape Town, seeded three, captured the u-18 girls' title by upsetting top-seeded Theresa van Zyl, of Northern Cape, 6-2 6-1.
