THE infamous Van Stadens "bridge of death" claimed yet another victim yesterday when a 28-year-old man from Port Alfred plunged to his death.
This marks the 85th victim since the bridge's opening in November 1971.
According to police, Wayne Wewege jumped off the bridge at about 6am.
Police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Marianette Olivier said Wewege's bakkie was spotted on the bridge via the CCTV cameras at the Thornhill police station. "Police vehicles were immediately dispatched but it was too late, the man had already jumped," she said.
"Due to the bad lighting at the time, police waited for daybreak and launched a search-and-rescue operation."
By about 8am the man's body had been found in bushes under the bridge.
"There were no letters or details inside the vehicle and we are attempting to establish the reason for this," Olivier said.
Wewege had relatives in Port Elizabeth, according to the police.
