I CANNOT believe I must have worked with someone as mean-spirited and nasty as the person who wrote a letter objecting to buses and catering provided for Jimmy Matyu's funeral by the municipality ("Is funeral funding legal?", October 9).
No, the municipality does not do this for everyone. But the years Jimmy worked in this city not only as a struggle icon, but also as a top class journalist who wrote many stories to do with the municipality, whether for or against.
He was a man of integrity who knew more about the history of this part of the country than most people and wrote several books relating to the area. He was always prepared to help others, specially the younger members of the community who relied on him for help and support.
Yes, Jimmy, you did deserve the little the municipality did for you and I do not object to a single cent my rates might have contributed. Nobody else from the Evening Post who is still alive will deserve this honour.
