Algoa Bus driver arrested for theft

12 October 2012
AN ALGOA Bus driver was arrested at 3pm yesterday after he claimed to have been robbed of the day's takings by two random gunmen.

The 46-year-old driver, who cannot be named until he appears in court, was arrested after giving an affidavit stating that he was robbed near the Strand Street bus terminus in Central.

Humewood police station commander Brigadier Ronald Koll said detectives became suspicious and took the man back to the scene of the crime.

"While detectives were questioning him, they asked that he empty his pockets and take off his shoes. He refused and police eventually removed his shoes and found the notes and coins stashed inside," Koll said.

More than R800 in notes and coins was recovered.

The driver is due to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court today on charges of perjury and theft. – Gareth Wilson
