Province on back foot after losses

15 October 2012

EASTERN Province completed a miserable week at the South African Mid-Amateur Interprovincial with a crushing 9½-2½ loss against Ekurhuleni at Schoeman Park, Bloemfontein.

Eastern Province, who won promotion to the top flight after clinching the B Section at Humewood Golf Club last year, failed to win a match all week and the defeat at the hands of Ekurhuleni on Friday hardly came as a surprise.

They were outclassed all week and their fate was sealed when they stumbled to a 9½-2½ defeat against fellow relegation candidates Boland on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Central Gauteng staged a remarkable comeback to lift the A Section trophy on Friday. An intense final round battle was expected between the three front-runners, but KwaZulu-Natal and Western Province faded under the pressure exerted by Central Gauteng.

Western Province could do no better than a 7-5 result against neighbours Boland, leaving the way clear for KwaZulu-Natal to retain their title.

But Central took a 3½-½ lead into the singles and, although they secured the victory in their first four games, the team continued to drill the coastal side for an unprecedented 10-2 triumph.
