IT was payback time yesterday for pupils everywhere when a principal was made to stand at a busy intersection in Port Elizabeth wearing a white wedding dress.
All in the name of National Boss Day, Merryvale Primary School principal Mario Engelbrecht flashed his hairy legs to motorists at the robots on the corner of Alan Drive and the William Moffett Expressway yesterday morning.
Some motorists liked what they saw and dropped a donation in Engelbrecht's make-shift tin bouquet.
"He was a good sport," said the head of department, Antoinette Esterhuyse, who organised yesterday's prank along with the school's entertainment committee.
Engelbrecht said he was none the wiser when he arrived at school yesterday morning. Being National Boss Day, he thought his only surprise would be gifts.
But the staff at the Mangold Park school had a very different surprise in store, and they went all out by dressing Engelbrecht in a white dress, veil and tiara.
He also wore a cardboard poster around his neck. In the front it read: "I am a good boss", and at the back it stated: "Married to my school. Deliver books on time ... Taking my staff to Disneyland. Donations please."
While the money he raised was not quite enough to make good on his promise, Engelbrecht undertook to at least throw them a small tea party.
October 16 is National Boss Day, a tradition started in the US in 1958.
