Dialogues on geographical names

THE Eastern Cape Geographic Names Change Committee is holding public dialogues to get people talking about geographical names which they feel are offensive or have been spelt incorrectly.

The acting chairman of the committee, Scebie Noah, said it was the first time such dialogues were being held in Nelson Mandela Bay – and they were aimed at gathering the public's views and opinions on what the committee called the "standardisation of geographical names". He said geographical name changes formed part of the process of redressing the marginalisation of indigenous language, culture, and heritage.

"It's trying to bring back social cohesion and dignity to the people."
