Storm batters Bay

HUNDREDS of people were evacuated from low-lying areas as heavy rains and strong winds battered Nelson Mandela Bay last night, with the city braced for more flooding over the next three days. Several roads were closed due to flooding and trees uprooted by winds of up to 59km/h.

The storm, which broke shortly after 7pm and included thunder and lightning, saw the disaster management centre put on alert in the Bay.

The Port Elizabeth Weather Office had earlier issued a warning that heavy rain was expected along the coast between Cape St Francis and Port Alfred.
