Spotlight on country's offensive place names

THERE are many places in the Eastern Cape with offensive names such as Kaffersdorp, Kaffersleg and Kwalini – a word originally used to describe an open outdoor area where people relieved themselves.

This emerged at a public dialogue on geographical names at the Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, yesterday.

The discussion was organised by the provincial names change committee which facilitates the process to rectify names that are offensive or incorrectly spelt.
