Bay library staff say 'no' to Saturday work

19 October 2012

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is bracing itself for a battle with unions which have vowed to fight the proposal for municipal libraries to open on Saturdays without extra compensation.

While the municipality is working to ensure its case is legally compliant with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, the city cannot find the original employment letters of 121 library staff.

Of the letters that were found, 49 staff members were given letters that stipulated they were hired as six-day workers while nine staff were appointed as five-day workers.

This is simple. The municipality must recognise the Conditions of Employment. Labour Laws states it clearly that Saturday is not a normal day, Saturday is time and a half. These workers are willing to work on Saturday from what I hear but they want to be paid. The Municipality knows very well that it has no leg to stand on or it would have forced these workers.

Then what seems to be the problem? the 49 whose letters have been found and stipulate 6 days must work on Saturdays .
