Ex-PE man now LA's richest

19 October 2012
Kathryn Kimberley

A FORMER Port Elizabeth man is living the American dream – going from life in a dilapidated building in North End to being named the richest man in Los Angeles, with a net worth of more than R60-billion.

But while Dr Patrick Soon-Shiong's empire could fund a small country, the 59-year-old family man, who owns a stake in the LA Lakers basketball team, has not forgotten his humble beginnings.

His parents fled China during World War 2 and sought refuge in South Africa.

For the full story of Dr Soon-Shiong's amazing rags to riches story, read The Herald, or get the complete newspaper, including comics, classifieds and crosswords in our e-Edition
