ALF Kumalo, the veteran journalist and acclaimed photographer who chronicled the story of South Africa, has died. His cousin, Dumisani Kumalo, a former ambassador to the UN, said the 82-year-old Kumalo had not been well for a while. He died yesterday.

"We lost a hero. We lost a great man and a brother and a pillar in our family," Dumisani said.

Press ombudsman Joe Thloloe described Kumalo as "a personal friend".

"He was a great photographer. It is going to be a huge loss to the world because of what he was doing at his museum [Alf Kumalo Photographic Museum in Soweto] and his training," Thloloe said.
