Death and destruction

LARGE parts of the rain- battered Eastern Cape were cut off at the weekend as raging waters, stoked by the unrelenting downpours, washed away bridges and major roads collapsed.

Houses were flooded or washed away, roads turned into rivers and landslides blocked roads.

Eight people, including a five- year-old boy, have died in weather-related accidents since the rain started on Wednesday, and one person is missing.

In Port Elizabeth last night, two cars were swept away after a bridge near the Old Uitenhage Road collapsed.

Municipal spokeswoman Marthie Nel said the bridge between Booysen Park and Kleinskool collapsed, and a Golf with two people inside and a Bantam bakkie with only the driver were swept away.

The people in the Golf were recovered safely, while the driver of the bakkie was found later and taken to hospital.
