Man arrested for murder of PE woman

A PORT Elizabeth man was arrested yesterday in connection with the rape and murder of an elderly Algoa Park woman.

Frederika Ferreira, 64, was raped and strangled by an intruder at her 6th Avenue, Algoa Park, house two weeks ago. Only a cellphone was stolen.

The media was not informed at the time. Police spokesman Captain Stanley Jarvis said yesterday neighbours alerted police after not seeing Ferreira for two days. "Officers broke the front window to gain entry."

Jarvis said police managed to link the suspect to previous crimes through forensic evidence collected at the scene. They put out an identikit and the suspect was identified as a local beggar. The suspect, 40, is due to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court tomorrow.
