Heavily armed security officials escorted the group back to the holding cells shortly after magistrate Abigail Beaton ruled that they would remain in custody until June next year, when the trial is expected to start in the Port Elizabeth High Court.
The accused – Unathi Wana, 33, Lonwabo Nethi, 28, Mongesi Tsume, 37, Madoda Nube, 38, Luyanda Njokweni, 37, Xolani Nanto, 37, and Vuyile Ngcangisa, 50 – were arrested between November and December last year after they allegedly hijacked a security van transporting the precious substance.
