Pupils stranded in transport row

A SQUABBLE over a cut in a pupil transport subsidy has left hundreds of pupils at St Albans Primary School in Port Elizabeth stranded just two weeks before the start of the final examinations.

This comes after 200 pupils, from Grade R to Grade 8, were left without transport following a decision by the Education Department to subsidise only 124 pupils.

The move by the department has frustrated teachers, who are said to be demotivated at a time when they are busy preparing for the exams.

St Albans Primary School principal Henry Coleman said 324 pupils, the majority of whom live in the informal settlement surrounding the St Albans area, depended on the transport.
