R400 000 to pump Walmer flood waters

STORMWATER drainage in Nelson Mandela Bay's Walmer township is virtually non-existent and attempts by the municipality to address the problem are hampered by budget constraints.

The municipality needs R55-million to address the bulk stormwater challenges but only has R24-million in its budget for the current financial year.

It costs the city R400000 to pump flood water from Walmer township each time it rains, according to infrastructure and engineering acting executive director Walter Shaidi.

"That's not even including all the other areas like Kuyga. We cannot afford to do it anymore."

Shaidi was speaking before the heavy rains that wreaked havoc in the Bay at the weekend.
