A PRIMARY school teacher appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court yesterday in connection with the alleged rape of a 12-year-old pupil.

The teacher had initially faced two charges of rape and seven of sexual assault involving nine pupils, some just 10 years old.

The 45-year-old man, who teaches at De Vos Malan Primary School in Schauderville, had handed himself over at the Mount Road police station at 10am. He was released on R2000 bail.

Prosecutor Tim van Rooyen said the state would only proceed with the charge involving the 12-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped on the school premises.
