East beats west in regatta

23 October 2012
EAST triumphed over west when the Knysna Halfway Regatta was held at Belvedere Estate outside Knysna at the weekend despite torrential rain that prevailed throughout the day. The rowers of Grey High, St Andrew's College, Selborne and DSG pitted themselves against tough competition from SACS, Bishops, Rondebosch Boys, Somerset College and Western Rowing Development in difficult conditions, with low visibility and choppy water.

Despite the trying conditions, the regatta officials managed to keep the event on time and running smoothly.

The morning started with the heats of the 1000m events for all the senior categories and progressed to the under-15 500m. Once all the heat times were recorded, the finals results were published for those rowers who would race for their medals.

The prestigious first eight race was won by SACS in an impressive display of rowing, followed by St Andrew's, Rondebosch, Bishops and Selborne.

However the boatrace distance (5400m) races the next morning were won by St Andrew's, followed by SACS, Rondebosch and Bishops.

The junior women's quads were won by DSG, with Somerset College a boat length behind, followed by Peninsula Girls Rowing and the Western Cape Development team.

In the girls' boatrace event, the same order prevailed.

Overall, the victor ludorum was won by St Andrew's with 111 points, with Grey second on 100 points, to make it a one-two for the Eastern Cape at the top of the order. The third place went to Somerset College. SACS came seventh, making their first eight victory even more impressive.
