Pearson's top players come through

23 October 2012
PEARSON pupils Wade Hoft and Siphokazi Mapakati took the top honours by being named the senior sportsman and sportswoman of the year at the school's annual prize-giving.

Hoft has been Pearson's singles tennis champion for the past four years, while Mapakati excelled on the netball court, making the Eastern Cape u-17 team this year.

Besides his singles prowess, Hoft also won the Pearson doubles title this year and he was unbeaten in the schools' 1A Premier league. He was a member of the PE Tennis Club team which won the premier league last month.

He was a semifinalist in all the mini series tournaments he played during the year and was selected for the SA u-17 team which toured the UK.

Mapakati, who is in Grade 11, was a member of the u-17 Eastern Cape netball team which competed in the SA Schools all age-group tournament in Gauteng in July.

The junior sportsman of the year categories went to Tinus Loots (hockey) while Femcke van Rensburg (tennis) and Carlyle Bromfield (netball) shared the girls' award.

Loots made the EP u-16A hockey team and he has played first team hockey for Pearson since Grade 9. Van Rensburg is the 2012 Pearson singles and doubles champion and represented EP u-16. Bromfield was selected for the Eastern Cape team for the SA Schools all age-group tournament.
