Uproar over sand mining permit

INZULU Mining Company has been given the rights to mine sand in Walmer, on Nelson Mandela Bay municipal land, without the council's consent.

This has enraged councillors on the public health portfolio committee, who were offended the company did not need to ask their permission to mine there because it had received a permit from the Department of Mineral Resources.

The permit was granted on condition the proposed mining be approved by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to ensure vegetation in the area was protected.
