Escape from hijackers

25 October 2012
Gareth Wilson

A QUICK-THINKING Port Elizabeth woman managed to evade a possible hijacking after pretending to have a flat tyre, asking one of the suspects to check it, then speeding off in the opposite direction.

Eastern Cape police are now searching for two men who seemingly posed as policemen, and pulled the woman over on the N2 near the Cotswold offramp during peak hour on Tuesday.

Crime experts say the incident mimics a series of similar hijackings by blue-light gangs in which hijackers, posing as policemen, flash blue lights mounted on their vehicles and pull cars over before hijacking them.

The gangs usually operate in Gauteng, Cape Town and KwaZulu-Natal.
