AFTER the outrageous disaster of being a host city for the Fifa World Cup, when we spent hundreds of millions of rands we could not afford and will be paying off for too many years to come, it is now suggested by the acting municipal manager that we cut the already under-serviced and under-financed budget to fund a bunch of no talent, overpaid soccer players from all over Africa ("Services cut to fund Afcon", October 19).
I strongly suggest that whoever has any influence over municipal budgets and spending stops this absolutely ridiculous suggestion before it has time to be implemented, and that Themba Hani is dismissed immediately for his total non-understanding of his function and the needs of the ratepayers.
I would appeal to Danny Jordaan to use some of the millions of dollars he garnered from helping the abuse of Port Elizabeth as a World Cup venue and Nceba Faku, our ex-mayor, to donate some of the millions of rands he and his wife have recently made from their solar panel venture into New Brighton and Motherwell. (The balance will obviously be forthcoming from local and national ANC government as per the World Cup).
This way the soccer can be catered for and the rest of us can continue with our non-service delivery and the R8.4-million can still be spent where it is most needed.
