Cold Fact: Rodriguez to perform in SA

25 October 2012
Mexican-American singer-songwriter Rodriguez will perform in South Africa in February, Big Concerts announced on Thursday (25/10/2012).

Rodriguez will perform two concerts — one in Johannesburg on February 15 and one in Cape Town on February 20.

This would be his second tour to South Africa. Rodriguez first performed in the country in 1998.

The musician, who is from Detroit in the United States, has been working on his music career since the early 1960s.

In 1969 he recorded the album, Cold Fact, which bombed in the US and Rodriguez disappeared into the unknown. Many believed he had committed suicide.

However, the album took on a life of its own outside the US and became a phenomenon in South Africa, even though it was banned by the apartheid government.

Rodriguez, who was still living in Detroit, was unaware that he had become a household name in South Africa.

Earlier this year, the documentary "Searching for Sugar Man” was released, chronicling the search for Rodriguez in the late 1990s by two South Africans. - Sapa
