IN a testimony to its exceptionally high standards, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University showcased a number of South African household names at its 2012 Alumni Awards held in Port Elizabeth last night.

With the opening and keynote addresses by NMMU's Alumni Association president Randall Jonas and vice- chancellor Professor Derrick Swartz respectively, and officiating duties shared by NMMU's entertaining duo of Paul Geswindt, director of Alumni Relations, and Legacies director Professor Kotie Grové, the glittering function at the Summerstrand Hotel celebrated and honoured 12 former students who have recorded exceptional achievements both locally and abroad.

The third edition of the university's awards, held "to recognise alumni who have gone the distance and beyond in their various fields, to the benefit of society at local, provincial, national and international level" recognised a strong list of achievers who represented breakthroughs in fields ranging from education and fashion to global banking and the pharmaceutical industry.
