MORE than two years and millions of rands later, Metro Security has finally been awarded the contract to secure Nelson Mandela Bay buildings.
Metro Security was given the letter of award on Thursday, 20 days after the deadline which was ordered by the Port Elizabeth High Court.
The news sparked an outcry at a municipal public accounts committee (MPAC) meeting on Friday, with councillors demanding to know who was responsible for the delay in awarding the tender.
They want the city's internal auditor to investigate the delay and expose the official responsible for the "fruitless and wasteful expenditure" for the legal costs and hold him accountable.
The security tender has cost ratepayers more than R1.4-million in legal fees. This excludes the more than R800000 legal bill of Metro Security, which the city has to cover.
