AWARD-WINNING young designer Kelly Esterhuyse's clothing designs are finally available nationwide after her range was launched at Mr Price shops yesterday.
The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) fashion design graduate won the 2011 Elle New Talent Design Award. Her prize included the chance to design for the fashion chain, a fashion spread in Elle Magazine and R25000 to start up her own line.
The range is on sale at Mr Price Greenacres but not all the items are available in this region.
"Obviously I am very excited about the range coming out. This has really been a lifelong dream of mine to see my designs distributed by a retail store. It is a summer range with tropical prints and was also inspired by the designs that won me the competition," the 22-year-old said.
Her favourite items include a printed jacket and tailored printed pants.
Esterhuyse was born in East London before moving to Nelson Mandela Bay to study fashion design at NMMU. She has won several awards and showcased her work at SA Fashion Week alongside fashion gurus Gavin Rajah and David Tlale.
Because it is essentially a summer range, her line of clothing does not feature Esterhuyse's trademark – and uniquely Eastern Cape – mohair designs.
The range, which was designed earlier this year, is available in more than 40 Mr Price stores.
Esterhuyse said her plans of moving to the Mother City – where she says her target market is – are on hold and she will stay in Nelson Mandela Bay.
