Teen sky-diving accident probed

02 November 2012
A SKY-DIVING accident that left a Mossel bay teenager seriously injured when his chute failed to open during a more than 3000m jump is being investigated by the Parachute Association of South Africa (Pasa).

Henco van Wyk, 17, a Grade 11 pupil at George's Outeniqua High School, plummeted about 1000m to the ground on Sunday after his main chute and reserve chute became entangled.

Van Wyk's father, Henk, a parachute instructor at Sky Dive Mossel Bay, said his son's main chute failed to open at about 1000m and he deployed his reserve chute, but the two became entangled.

Henco suffered numerous fractures and injured his back.

He underwent a back operation earlier this week and will undergo surgery to a leg on Monday.

Pasa accident investigator Mark Bellingham said the incident was still under investigation. – Janine Oelofse, Gareth Wilson
