THE Eastern Cape is home to more black millionaires than white. This is according to data from the Census 2011 results released this week by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).

The census gives a snapshot of life in South Africa.

It also reveals the emergence of a contingent of black diamonds, or black middle class, in the province.

Business owners in Nelson Mandela Bay said more and more affluent blacks were hanging out in glitzy bars, driving luxury cars, competing for the best homes and shopping in upmarket stores.

More than 3731 black people ticked the millionaire box on the census questionnaire in the province last year. Only 2250 white people followed suit, and 409 coloureds.

Indians and Asians were at the bottom of the list with 141 millionaires.
