THE net has closed on 26 Nelson Mandela Bay doctors who are among 10000 healthcare professionals suspended by the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA) for failing to pay their annual fees. The announcement comes after the deadline for the payment of annual fees was disregarded, despite the council having exhausted all avenues in contacting the practitioners – including letters, telephone calls and SMSes.
In the Eastern Cape, 357 healthcare practitioners have been suspended, of which 235 are basic ambulance assistants.
HSPCA spokeswoman Bertha Peters-Scheepers said it was a criminal offence, in terms of the Health Professions Act, for healthcare professionals who were suspended or removed from the register to practise.
