Daring chase ended in death

THE former traffic officer who was gunned down while driving a suspected getaway vehicle for a band of robbers fired wildly at the police and a security guard before he was killed, the Port Elizabeth High Court heard yesterday.

A policeman who was instrumental in the arrest of the group of men accused of robbing the Metlife Plaza Wimpy, Constable Deon Muller, told the court that their high-speed chase through the streets of New Brighton came to an abrupt end when the driver, Mhlope Menye, stopped and the car veered into a space between shacks.

It was later discovered that Menye was fatally wounded during the chase.
