Biography on Biko launched

08 November 2012
Hendrick Mphande

THE best way to honour the legacy of Black Consciousness Movement founder Steve Biko is through scholarship.

That is the opinion of African intellectual Dr Xolela Mangcu, who was speaking at the launch of his book, Biko: A Biography, at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University last night.

"Over the past decade, I have wondered whether we have done enough to honour him. Those who engage in such discussions like to name streets or buildings, but the best way to honour him is through scholarship," Mangcu said

Writing the book about Biko, he said, was an attempt to honour not only him but all intellectuals of the province who were among the anti- apartheid activists of the 1970s.
