Hearty Karoo flavours make festive gift ideas

Posted : 28 November 2012
THERE’S something very comforting about traditional South African cooking – and now there’s a book available which combines South African cuisine with flavours of the world.

Now in its fifth edition, “Karoo Family Favourites” is aptly named, featuring, as it does, a “fun for kids” section which teaches them how to make their own play dough, sherbet and French toast.

This is the first of lots of small, user-friendly sections taking the reader on a culinary journey making the most of ingredients found in the Karoo.

The book is a project of the Union Preparatory School in Graaff-Reinet and more than 10500 copies have been sold.

There’s an extensive section on game which offers several variations on the ever-popular venison pie, as well as some more unusual ideas like guineafowl pie. And also guidelines on how to make your own biltong and droëwors.

In the braai section there’s a fascinating recipe for a pot pudding which sees batter balls being dropped into a syrup the base of which is a bottle of blanc de noir wine, and a whole host of salad ideas to accompany the braai.

With the festive season coming up keep this little gem of a book in mind as the perfect gift for cooks on the lookout for new ideas.

  • “Karoo Family Favourites” is available from Union Preparatory School in Graaff-Reinet on (049)892-3848 for R110 (excluding postage of R30); or else in PE at Fogarty’s Bookshop, Walmer Park, for R174.50.
