No Afcon 'refund' for city

THE R8.4-million taken from key Nelson Mandela Bay service delivery projects to fund the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) event would not be replaced, councillors heard yesterday.

Budgets for illegal dumping, water repairs and maintenance, sanitation, and electricity and energy were all cut so that the metro could host the tournament.

But acting municipal manager Selwyn Thys told councillors yesterday the money would not be replaced.

This irked DA councillor Leon de Villiers, who demanded that economic development and recreational services acting director Zolile Siswana apologise for "misleading the public".

Siswana, however, later said he had never promised that the departments would get the money back.

So to all those voters out there in Walmer township and the likes with the bucket system I hope you either enjoyed the Afcon soccer or you are going to vote for another party more committed to service delivery. I agree that the Metro needs to invest in promoting business in the area such as Afcon, but not at the expense of service delivery which is already a major concern.
