Kuyga feud turns ugly

08 March 2013

THE ongoing feud at a Greenbushes school in Nelson Mandela Bay has turned ugly, with some concerned parents and former teachers claiming Afrikaans- speaking children are being emotionally and physically abused.

They also claim the principal of Kuyga Intermediate School, Vuvu Dubula, is mismanaging it and trying to remove the last few Afrikaans teachers by forcing all classes to be given in English.

Tension has been brewing at the school for the past two years, with class disruptions during which predominantly Afrikaans- speaking coloured parents remove their children in protest against the lack of mother- tongue tuition.

According to one parent and concerned former teachers, the majority of the Afrikaans-speaking pupils no longer attend the school as the medium of instruction in nearly all their classes is English or Xhosa, which they do not understand.
