East Cape police running out of crucial rape kits

A SHORTAGE of vital police rape kits in the Eastern Cape could see rapists walk free. In Nelson Mandela Bay yesterday, police were expecting to run out of the kits before the weekend.

The East London and Mthatha clusters were also running out of the kits.

The provincial crisis comes just days after police confirmed shortages of the rape kits in Gauteng and North West.

The kits are crucial in securing arrests and convictions, according to experts.

Provincial police spokeswoman Brigadier Marina Mills confirmed that the three clusters were running out of rape kits.

Mills said Western Cape police had been asked for help and rape kits would be collected from them "soon".

She could not, however, say exactly when this would be.
