A ninth policeman has been arrested in connection with the murder of taxi driver Mido Macia in Daveyton, on the East Rand, SABC News reported on Friday (08/03/2013).
Two warrant officers and six constables were arrested last Friday and appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The court granted a request that they be held at an undisclosed police station until their next appearance, to avoid the risk of them being in custody with people they had helped to convict at Modderbee prison.
It also agreed that they not be identified to the public before an identity parade on Thursday.
They were expected to apply for bail on Friday. The court granted them permission, during their last court appearance, to be absent from the proceedings. The court has yet to determine whether the charge is a schedule five or six offence.
The policemen are charged with the murder of Mozambican national, Mido Macia.
He was allegedly tied to the back of a police van and dragged along a street in Daveyton last Tuesday. An eyewitness filmed the assault.
Macia was found dead in a police cell several hours later. A post mortem revealed he had died of head and internal injuries. - Sapa
